Lighting Up the Darkness

I take light at night for granted …until the winter storms bring the darkness back.  First there is a sense of surprise, “Why won’t the garage door open?” …then quick fumbling through the garage to get the generator going and the candles out and then that sense of unusual peace and quiet.  The time has come to enjoy the moment.  I can enjoy the darkness because fundamentally I know it is temporary.  Not so much for nearly 1.6 billion people, upwards of 30% of the global population, that are without access to electricity.  So when you hear about the Dutch company Philips working on a solar-powered LED lantern it is a bright light in the darkness of corporate news.
