Computer Animation Pioneer Honored Again

Ed Catmull was awarded the Gordon Sawyer Award at the Sci-Tech Oscars last week for his lifetime of achievement in the development of computer graphics.  I had to admit that I really didn’t know that much about Ed or his innovations…. It sounded like it was high time I found out.

A short search yielded a ton of information and…My-oh-My! Even for those of us who don’t have a clue about the Catmull-Rom Spline or the Catmull-Clarke Subdivision Surface, we owe this man more than a little respect. This is especially true for those of us involved in the production of film and video, digital gaming or digital audio; and for all of us who just love to sit back and enjoy the magic of motion picture animation and special effects. Why should we care? Think texture mapping, digital compositing, Renderman et al… and find out more about Ed at:
